Day 55: Páirc an Chrócaigh (GAA)

Today was a day of fun for me. It started off with a visit with Sister Eileen, where we bought breakfast food for my family's arrival the next day, then some personal shopping time (to get things for spring break!)

The highlight of today was going to Croke Park again, but this time to see a hurling and a gaelic football match. These sports are both some of the craziest things I've ever seen in the sporting world.

Hurling is called the fastest sport on grass, and they are not lying. Think of it as a combination of lacrosse, baseball, and field hockey. Scoring is a combination of goals (3 points) and points (1 point). Goals are scored by hitting the ball into the net. Points are scored by hitting the ball through the two poles above the net (think like extra points in football).

Today it was the teams from Dublin and Cork that were playing. Within the first 40 seconds, each team had scored a point. by halftime the score was Dublin 0-8 to Cork 0-21. By the end of the game Cork had one with a score of 1-20(dub) to 0-34(cork).

Gaelic Football is not like the traditional european football (soccer) that you would normally think. Think of it as a combination of soccer, basketball, and a little football (american). They are allowed to hold the ball in their hands and run, except that every three steps they either have to bounce the ball off the pitch (ground) or their foot or throw the ball to someone else. They are allowed to throw the ball and kick the ball to get goals and points. Same scoring system as hurling.

Today it was Dublin against Tyrone. This game was still just as intense as the hurling game, but the score was very tight throughout that it actually ended in a draw at the end of the match. The final score was Dublin 1-9 and Tyrone 0-12.
